History & lore
The name means "seawater" in Latin. Sailors carried aquamarine to protect them from storms and seasickness. The Brazilian government gave Eleanor Roosevelt a 1,298-carat aquamarine in 1936, and it is now on display at the FDR Library. Bloodstone, a dark green stone with red flecks, is March's traditional second birthstone.
Care
Hard and durable, so it is great for engagement-style rings. Clean with warm soapy water.
Value
Light blues are moderate (about $50–$200 per carat). Intense blues of several carats cost much more.
