- Durability: diamond, ruby and sapphire (9–10) handle daily rings; pearl, opal and turquoise are better as necklaces and earrings.
- Lab-created vs natural: both are real gems; lab stones cost less and have more even color.
- Family pieces: multi-stone necklaces and mother's rings add one stone per person.

Questions, answered
What is the best birthstone necklace?
For everyday wear, a small bezel-set pendant in solid gold or sterling silver is durable and timeless. Choose lab-created stones for better color at a lower price.
Which birthstones are too soft for rings?
Pearl (2.5–4.5), turquoise (5–6) and opal (5.5–6.5) scratch and chip easily, so they're better in pendants and earrings or in protective settings.
